The large public knows a man by saliencies of manner rather than by fundamental characteristics, and this is true, in a measure, even of the theological public. Thus it has come about that for one person who is intimately acquainted with Dean Inge's real contribution to Christian thought, a score could recognize his work at the first glance by its characteristic pungencies of style and mordancies of wit. Perhaps no living theologian gives such free play to a native capacity for incisive criticism, keen-edged irony, and biting scorn. This trait both reveals and obscures his real personality. It obscures his deeper affinities with the speculative and mystical elements in religion and his unswerving contention for the supremacy of spiritual interests. Coming to the content of Dean Inge's contribution to theology, we find on the critical side a vigorous reaction against the domination of modern theology by pragmatism and voluntarism, which comprizes what is perhaps the most effective critique of Ritschlianism and of Roman Catholic modernism which has as yet been given us in small compass. On the positive and constructive side Dr. Inge has greatly contributed to the understand ing and rehabilitation of true Christian mysticism and to a restatement of the Logos-Christology and of all that is valid in Neo-Platonism. His critique of Ritschlianism and kindred tendencies invites comparison with Dr. Denney.
